Dichroic Glass: Bio

Kristin King - (vocals/keyboard)

KK PicKristin has been involved with music since she was a small child, belting out lyrics to 70's songs while riding in the family station wagon. Her love of interesting harmonies began at this early age, as her mother sang along also, adding a layer above the melody to better suit her soprano voice. Kristin sought out opportunities to sing, often recruiting her siblings so that they could sing different parts. At age 7, Kristin began piano lessons, which not only taught her to read music, but also helped her pick up some of the technical side of music composition. Singing remained her focus, though, and throughout high school and college, she joined every chorus and liturgical singing group she could, as well as performed in several school musical productions. Once out of college, she spent a few years concentrating on her career, getting married, and starting a family, but in 2002 she was at it again, adding her voice to the already established folk group, Pious Praise, which provided worship music at her parish.

Maureen Rush-Bogutz - (vocals/acoustic guitar/electric guitar)

MRB PicMaureen was enthralled with music as a young kid, listening for hours to records and singing at family gatherings. She took piano lessons as a young child, but fell in love with the guitar, when she first began to play at the age of 12. Largely an ear player and non-traditional in her approach, she has studied under a number of different teachers. She started playing and singing at parties and small venues when she was a teenager. She belonged to a number of musical groups and started writing songs at this time. In college she continued to play and sing at open mics and in choirs. While she pursued a career in higher education, she continued to maintain her passion for music as an avocation. In the late 1980s Maureen had the opportunity to travel internationally in "Up With People", which is a professionally produced music group that performs and does community service work, all over the world. In the early 90s, Maureen sang with the Anna Crusis women’s choir in Philadelphia. After settling down and getting married and having kids, she joined different church folk groups and eventually found one she loved.

Greg King - (bass/guitar/vocals)

GK PicAs a teenager in the 70's, Greg picked up a guitar and tried playing along with records on the family stereo (e.g. Beatles, Byrds, The Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival).  Focusing on the rhythm guitar parts, he eventually (after much pain and suffering inflicted on his family) discovered common chord progressions that are used in many songs, and became a fairly good ear player.  Since that time he has continued to play on-and-off, primarily for his own amusement.  When listening to music, Greg often finds himself gravitating to the bass parts, and in 2007 he finally decided to try his hand at bass guitar.  The timing worked out well, since Kristin and Maureen were looking for a bass player to join them in some of their live performances.  After receiving several comments about their clever bass-playing mannequin, Kristin and Maureen had to explain to the audience that Greg was indeed a live member of the band, and Kristin even went so far as to admit being married to him.  Greg enjoys being a part of Dichroic Glass, in which he plays bass, some guitar, and an occasional vocal.  He’s hoping to catch the songwriting bug so he can contribute to the repertoire of original songs written by Maureen and Kristin.

Al Bogutz - (percussion)

AB PicThe latest member to join the band is 'Bongo Bogutz'. In certain circles he is known as 'Easy Do Al'. Bongo was invited to add percussion 'spice' in the testosterone-driven rhythm section. While Greg gets funky laying down the bass beat, Al will dig into his bag’o percussion to find the 'just right' instrument to shake, bang, tap, or twist. Careful observers will find Al backing the band from the back of the stage. During college Al picked up a guitar to learn to play his favorite CCR songs. Since then Delta Blues and Jazz are a favorite musical diversion. The lovely Maureen is his beautiful bride. Twin sons, Ryan and Sean along with their Heinz 57 Rescue Dog, Indy round out a wonderful family life!

Dichroic Glass

It was in 2002 through church that Maureen and Kristin met in a folk group where they continue to sing and play today. A few years after joining the folk group, a subset of the group branched out to perform secular music. The band, called “Lost and Found,” played a few select venues, but schedules were difficult to coordinate, so opportunities to get together were few and far between. Kristin and Maureen shared the desire to continue to perform, and began to play and sing at local open mics. They formed the group Dichroic Glass in early 2006. Two working moms with young kids and a passion for music, they decided to explore their musical interests and collaborate and compose original music together. Their first CD, self-titled "Dichroic Glass," is a result of a great partnership and lots of support from family and friends, and a little divine intervention!

About a year later Kristin's and Maureen's wonderful and supportive husbands (Greg King and Al Bogutz) decided to join them for their live performances.  Greg is a multi-talented bass and guitar player.  Al (aka "Bongo Bogutz") rounds out the group's sound with his talents on a variety of percussion instruments.

The Importance of Research

Both Maureen's and Kristin's lives have been touched by cancer in a very personal way. Maureen lost her 14 year old nephew to leukemia in 2001. Then in mid 2006 Kristin was diagnosed with breast cancer. At this time, music became an even greater outlet for the musical duo. They started meeting regularly for coffee and "music therapy," as they called it. Throughout the course of Kristin's long and challenging treatment they began to collaborate and produce and record their first CD. They realized that the music had taken on an even greater meaning. It had become an inspiration and a vehicle for change. Kristin was battling a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer called "Her2/neu positive" cancer. It affects only 25% of the breast cancer population, and tends to strike women under the age of 40. Today Kristin is a survivor, thanks to medical research which helped in the life saving drugs that were not available just a few short years ago!! For this reason Dichroic Glass has pledged to donate proceeds of CD sales and musical performances to the fight against breast cancer.

What is in a name?

Many people ask us 'What is dichroic glass and why did you pick that name?'

Here is an example of dichroic glass:

DG sample

Dichroic glass is a material used for many purposes, including jewelry making. The layers of metallic oxides that are fused together to form dichroic glass result in a colorful, three-dimensional, layered effect that changes hues when viewed from different angles. We aspire to create rich, interesting sounds in our music by layering voices and instruments together with lyrics that explore experiences and issues to which everyone can relate, but speak especially to women. Also, we just love the jewelry! :-) Dichroic Glass is: Maureen Rush-Bogutz - vocals, guitar, bass, percussion Kristin King - vocals, keyboard, percussion Greg King - guitar, bass Al Bogutz - bongos, percussion
